Supermarket employees have used pedal power to raise money for charity.

Staff from Waitrose stores across the south east, including Weybridge and Hersham, got together to cycle 27 miles along the Olympic road race route last September.

The group managed to raise £18,000 through their efforts, of which £9,647.39 has now been donated to Princess Alice Hospice.

The Esher hospice provides specialist end of life and palliative care, support and advice for adult patients and their families both at the hospice and in their homes.

Its catchment area includes Surrey, South West London and Middlesex, serving a population in excess of 1 million.

More than £7 million is needed each year for the hospice to provide its services.

With limited NHS funding, more than 75% of this must come from voluntary donations and fundraising.
