This was the scene in Elmbridge today (Sunday) after snow fell across the borough overnight.

The flakes began to fall just before 6pm yesterday evening and had stopped by this morning.

Surrey Police has used its Twitter account to advise drivers to only make essential journeys and allow extra time to reach the destination.

South West Trains has said that it will be running a normal weekend service today.

The company added, however, that there may be some changes to its train service and journey times may be longer.

South West Trains is recommending that people check before they travel.

The Met Office has issued an amber warning of ice for Elmbridge and the rest of Surrey until midday today.

“A band of snow over eastern parts of England, with accumulations of 5-10cm widely, will clear eastwards on Sunday morning, turning generally lighter and to rain or sleet as it does so,” the organisation said.

“Behind this, clearing skies will lead to widespread icy patches forming.

“The public are advised to take extra care and that the ice and snow is likely to lead to travel disruption.”

Meanwhile, one of the most senior doctors at Epsom and St Helier University Hospitals NHS Trust has called on local people to think of their neighbours during the current cold weather.

Dr Ruth Charlton, a joint medical director at the trust, said: "We see a significant increase in the number of people being brought into A&E as a result of the cold weather, including elderly people who have fallen on ice and broken bones.

"It’s really important that we remember our neighbours at times like these and check that they are okay.

“Maybe you could pick up some shopping for them, collect a prescription from the local chemist or clear their path of snow?

"We should also make sure that they’re keeping warm and looking after their health.

“While we're all more likely to feel the chill in winter, for some, like older people, cold weather can lead to serious health problems such as pneumonia."
