Time is running out for residents in Elmbridge and beyond to get involved with London 2012 by volunteering as “Surrey Ambassadors”.
The county will be a part of four major events this summer, including the Olympic torch relay on July 20.
On July 28 and 29 the men’s and women cycling road races will pass through towns and villages across Surrey.
These will include East Molesey, West Molesey, Walton, Weybridge, Oxshott, Esher and Thames Ditton.
Then, on August 1, the cycling time trial will start and finish at Hampton Court, heading through areas in and around Molesey, Esher, Hersham and Cobham.
Surrey County Council has said that ambassadors will be required at all of these events.
The volunteers will be stationed at key locations along the cycle routes or at railway stations.
They will be expected to give directions, provide information about the Olympic events and direct spectators to facilities.
They will also be expected to encourage people to visit local attractions and events taking place during and after the Games.
Residents have until tomorrow (Tuesday) to apply to become a Surrey Ambassador.
Denise Saliagopoulos is the county council’s cabinet member for community services and the 2012 Games.
“Although we have had a great response with hundreds of applicants we still need more volunteers,” she said.
“We are recruiting up to 450 ambassadors with good local knowledge to welcome visitors and provide interesting and useful information about the area when the Olympics come to Surrey.
“It is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and I encourage everyone who wants to play their part in the 2012 Games to apply now.
“Ambassadors will get invaluable experience working directly with the public, they will get training and meet people from all over the world.”
Volunteers need to be 18 or over and be able to commit to at least two days of five hours between July 20 and August 1.
