Community group to take on advocacy services?
27 Jan 2012

At a meeting next Tuesday (January 31) the county council’s cabinet will discuss a proposal to turn over advocacy services to the Surrey Disabled People’s Partnership.

A community group could be set to take over providing information and advice to more than 1,400 people with disabilities across Surrey.

At a meeting next Tuesday (January 31) the county council’s cabinet will discuss a proposal to turn over advocacy services to the Surrey Disabled People’s Partnership.

Should the move be agreed, the partnership will run the services – which aim to help disabled people understand their rights and the choices available to them – for three years from April.

Surrey County Council said that the proposal had been drawn up with a view to improving the personal service people receive.

Michael Gosling is the authority’s cabinet member for adult social care and health.

“By taking this one team approach to advocacy services, we can make a real difference for disabled people by giving them as much choice and control over their lives as possible and helping them live independently in their own homes,” he said.

“As we continue to strive to improve services and save money this is very much part of our vision that recognises that those best placed to run services should be given the freedom to do so.

“Essentially we’re all one team working in the interests of Surrey.”
